Two young stars from teen drama Skins have said their on-screen lesbian relationship has helped gay girls find the courage to come out.

In an interview posted on the E4 website, Lily Loveless (Naomi) and Kathryn Prescott (Emily) said Skins is one of the few shows that feature young lesbians.

Prescott, 18, said: “There are young people who are male and coming out, that’s really prevalent. But it’s not for girls.

“There are a few shows [with lesbians] and they paint it as if it’s male written, like young fantasy lesbians but this is not like that.”

Loveless, 19, said: “People tell me it was very realistic. People come up to me in clubs and say ‘You made me come out’.

“It’s really cool. It’s odd because you live in a bubble when you’re filming and you forget it’s going to go out on TV.”

Earlier this year, Skins was nominated for a GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) award for outstanding comedy series.

Judges commended its fair, accurate and inclusive representation of LGBT issues but the series lost out to Desperate Housewives.
