Praise for Alexander McQueen’s ‘extraordinary talent’
Figures in fashion and politics have paid tribute to the talent, creativity and genius of British fashion designer Alexander McQueen.
McQueen, whose real first name was Lee, was found dead at his London home this morning and is thought to have committed suicide.
His body was removed from his Green Park house several hours later. Sources said he had been grieving for his mother, who died recently.
McQueen’s death was announced this afternoon and tributes from fans have already been given.
British Vogue editor Alexander Shulman said: “Lee McQueen influenced a whole generation of designers. His death is the hugest loss to anyone who knew him and for very many who didn’t.”
His fellow designers also followed suit, with Vivienne Westwood saying she was “incredibly sorry to hear the news”.
Designer Matthew Williamson said: “I am shocked and deeply saddened by McQueen’s death. He was a genius and his talent was second to none.
“Like many others, I always cited him as a hugely inspirational leader of world fashion. He will be greatly missed.”
Supermodel Kate Moss, who was one of many high-profile figures to wear his clothes, said she was “shocked and devastated” at the loss of her “dear friend”.
Gay culture secretary Ben Bradshaw added: “Alexander McQueen made an outstanding contribution to British fashion.
“His extraordinary talent and creativity mean that his designs are adored not just by followers of haute couture but lovers of great style everywhere.
“This is a great loss to one of Britain’s most successful industries and to the design world more widely.”
Celebrity fans of the designer also took to Twitter to share their condolences.
“Very, very sad news about Lee McQueen,” wrote singer Boy George. “He was a genius, such tragic news.”
US model and presenter Tyra Banks said: “RIP Alexander McQueen. So, so sad. Such a huge loss. He was one of my favourite designers. He will be missed.”
