Emma Watson: Papers asked if short hair meant I was gay
Emma Watson has revealed she was questioned by journalists over her short hairstyle and whether it meant she was coming out as a lesbian.
The 21-year-old former Harry Potter actress said the media had openly questioned her on whether her hair was a statement of her sexuality.
She told the Independent: “I had journalists asking me if this meant I was coming out, if I was a lesbian now.”
“That haircut did make me realise how subjective everyone’s opinion is. Some people were crazy for it and some people just thought I’d lost my shit. All I can do is follow my instincts, because I’ll never please everyone.”
Watson is not the only cast member from the Harry Potter films to have fielded questions on their sexuality.
Daniel Radcliffe has consistently rebuffed gay rumours while speaking up in favour of bullied gay youth and lending his support to the Trevor Project.
Even characters’ sexualities have been discussed. In 2007, she backed JK Rowling’s statement that Dumbledore, the headmaster of the fictional Hogwarts school attended by the wizards, was gay.
She said: “It never really occurred to me before, but now JK Rowling’s said that he’s gay it sort of makes sense.
“I think what surprised everyone was the amount of media attention it’s received. I think it’s nice that the story has ended but there are still things that people don’t know.”
