Video: US teen posts coming out video to YouTube
A teenage YouTube user in the US has recorded the conversation in which he comes out to his mother and posted it online saying he hopes it will be an “inspiration”.
Visibly nervous while waiting for his mother to return home, Daniel Thompson, better known as Mallow610, says he is planning to come out.
Shot from above in their kitchen, when she arrives home his mother says she can “tell something’s going on” with him and asks if he’s cleaned the house or is having people over.
His mother continues to guess: “You got a job? Like a real job? Professional job?”
She asks whether one of his previous YouTube videos has won an award. The most-watched video on the Mallow610 channel is an instructional film showing how to decorate Starbucks cups as last-minute Christmas present holders.
Thompson replies: “I’m gay”.
His mother replies, “Daniel, Daniel,” before hugging him.
He adds: “I know you probably already know, but I want to make it official.”
She says: “You know what, I am so proud of you.”
She goes on to discuss coming out in the modern world where prejudice still exists as he gulps a bottle of water and continues to anxiously fiddle with his iPhone.
Mallow610’s mother previously appeared in a skincare cream video for his reviews channel.
In the video description, he writes: “Finally got the strength to come out to my mom. My Mom has been extremely supportive. I could not ask for anyone else. Love you. Every circumstance is different and you will know when the right time to come out is. Stay strong. Babz and I are here for you. Note: I decided to post this so that I could share my experience with you. Hopefully it will be an inspiration to those who do not have such supportive families.”
The video ends with the message: “Don’t be afraid of who you are. My mom and I are here for you.”
