Video: Kirk Cameron calls gays ‘destructive to civilisation’
Former child star Kirk Cameron has been lambasted for his comments labelling homosexuality and gay marriage ‘destructive’, ‘unnatural’ and ‘detrimental’.
In an interview with Piers Morgan, Cameron, 41, called homosexuality “unnatural… I think that it’s detrimental, and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization.”
Cameron was known for his role on Growing Pains but now heads an evangelical ministry called The Way of the Master.
Talking with Piers Morgan, he said marriage was “almost as old as dirt” and had been “defined by God” as a union between a man and a woman “till death”.
Morgan asks what he would do if one of his children were gay, to which Cameron says he would have a “heart to heart” with the child, as Morgan would.
Morgan says if his son came out, he would say: “That’s great, son, as long as you’re happy. What would you say?”
Cameron says he would not take Morgan’s approach, but would say: “There’s all sorts of issues that we need to wrestle through in our life and just because you feel one way doesn’t mean we should act on everything that we feel.”
He adds that all people in his view are sinful, saying: “I could stand at the top of the list and say that I need a saviour, I need an overhaul of the heart more than anyone.”
In a brief interview with TMZ while the former News of the World editor was walking to his car, Morgan hesitated before describing Cameron’s decision to voice the opinion as “brave”.
He added: “Many would argue it’s an antiquated view.”
He said Cameron was “honest to what he believed” but on being told GLAAD was angered by the comments, Morgan said: “I can understand why”.
Herndon Graddick, Senior Director of Programs at GLAAD said: “In this interview, Kirk Cameron sounds even more dated than his 1980s TV character.
“Cameron is out of step with a growing majority of Americans, particularly people of faith who believe that their gay and lesbian brothers and sisters should be loved and accepted based on their character and not condemned because of their sexual orientation.”
Former actor and self-styled “Jesus freak” Stephen Baldwin tweeted: “GREAT JOB Kirk !!! Let’s pray one day Piers Morgan finds true Salvation, God Bless!”
