Gay rights activists organise Chick-fil-A kiss-ins
On Friday, gay rights activists will stage a ‘kiss-in’ in front of, and inside branches of fast food chain Chick-fil-A across America.
This move follows Wednesday being dubbed “Chick-fil-A appreciation day,” by former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee.
Some outlets saw increased business as some Americans supported the chain over its funding of anti-gay groups and opposition to marriage equality.
Yesterday evangelical minister, Rick Warren, tweeted: “@DanCathy just called me. #ChickFilA has already set a world record today, with 7 more hrs to go in the West. #OutOfChicken.”
This raised questions with critics over whether Cathy was deliberately stirring the pot.
Contrary to this, an official message on the Chick-Fil-A website said: “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day was not created by Chick-fil-A. We appreciate all of our customers and are glad to serve them any time.”
“As a privately held company, Chick-fil-A does not comment publically about out sales figures or volume.”
Gay employees of Chick-fil-A described Wednesday’s Appreciation Day as “very depressing”.
The company’s president, Dan Cathy, caused controversy recently when he told the Baptist Press that the company was “guilty as charged”, when asked about its perceived opposition to equal marriage.
