Uganda: Play banned by authorities for gay storyline
A Ugandan play tackling the difficulties of being gay in the country has been cancelled, ahead of a planned run at the country’s National Theatre in Kampala, after an intervention by authorities.
The play, titled ‘The River and the Mountain’, was set to be performed in the capital, but was cancelled when regulators intervened, The Guardian reported.
The plot included a young businessman coming to terms with being gay amidst an aggressively homophobic society.
Cast member Okuyo Joel Atiku Prynce told the Guardian:
“What is surprising is the fact that we have received no clear reason. No one is taking responsibility for this decision.”
“We’re actors, not activists,” he said. “The play is there to inspire discussion in the community and to get a reaction from people.”
Reportedly, some performances went ahead in smaller venues, but after the intervention, the National Theatre refused to show the play.
