Mika: I was scared of not being accepted by my family
Pop star Mika says last month’s decision to confirm his sexuality came from a place of “confidence and joy”.
In an interview with Metro, the Lebanese singer said: “I was scared [of] not being accepted by my family. “No one in my family is gay. No one in my extended family is gay”.
Mika continued: “It was a very foreign alien thing. You’re scared of being judged. Then you realise that there is nothing to be afraid of if you are happy. I fell in love. I lost love. I got it again”.
He said: “If you ask me ‘am I gay?’ I say yeah. Are these songs about my relationship with a man? I say yeah. And it’s only through my music that I’ve found the strength to come to terms with my sexuality beyond the context of just my lyrics. This is my real life.”
The Grace Kelly star also spoke to Metro about being bullied at school and said:
“As a person, I am quite guarded. I’m quite secretive. I’ve always been that way. I think it’s because I had a hard time at school, so I protected myself by shutting the fuck up, because I’d be hit”.
