Rupert Everett branded ‘gay dinosaur’ by Coronation Street star
Gay Coronation Street actor Charlie Condou has criticised Rupert Everett after he said that he couldn’t think of “anything worse” than having gay male parents.
Condou, who plays Marcus Dent in Coronation Street, has two children with boyfriend Cameron Laux, born to a female friend who acted as a surrogate mother.
He added: “Some people might not agree with that. Fine! That’s just my opinion”.
“Listen, the good news on this is, I’m not applying for any sort of public office,” Everett said.
Writing in today’s London Evening Standard, Condou criticises the openly gay actor for wanting to distance himself from the LGBT community.
“Rupert is a bit of a gay dinosaur,” he went on “The problem with sniping gorgeously from the sidelines is that, er, one can end up sidelined.
“Rupert’s breezy commentary seems to come from some place that is self-contained and remote. In the interview in which he criticises gay dads, he also says he doesn’t see himself as part of the gay community”.
Condou described that as being “sad” and also added: “there’s now robust evidence that children of gay couples grow up with almost no differences developmentally or intellectually to the children of straight couples”.
