US: Baseball player apologises for tweeting homophobic slur
A New York Mets baseball player has apologised after he used a homophobic slur in a twitter conversation with a friend earlier this month.
Noah Syndergaard, 20, a pitcher for the New York Mets, spoke to New York Media, and apologised for the tweet, which contained the word “fag”, and which was deleted soon after being posted. He said:
“I had a little mishap on Twitter about a month ago, and it was just brought to the attention this morning,” he said. “I’d just like to apologize for anything that was said.
“A buddy and I were having a little conversation. I had a poor attempt at humour and an even worse attempt at using a term I shouldn’t have used. I hope I didn’t offend anybody. I’m really sorry my first introduction to being a New York Met had to be like this.”
The tweet was deleted soon after being posted, but the New York Daily News posted a screenshot of it, on 9 December, before it was taken down. The tweet, sent from Mr Syndergaard’s official twitter account, @Noahsyndergaard, read:
“@DMarze89 nice crocs fag lol”.
Reports also suggest that the New York Mets are investigating the tweet, and that the full context in which it was sent were not known.
Critics have suggested that Mr Syndergaard will issue an official apology in the near future.
