American novelist and screenwriter Bret Easton Ellis has attacked the “gatekeepers of politically correct gayness”, denounced the recent media coverage given to gay basketball player Jason Collins, and slammed LGBT advocacy group GLAAD.

Writing for Out magazine, the gay author criticises the outpouring of support given to gay basketball player Jason Collins who came out last month.

Collins was treated, Ellis says, like a “kind of baby panda who needed to be honoured and praised and consoled and – yes – infantilised”.

Ellis then turns his attention to US LGBT advocacy group GLAAD.

“Being ‘real’ and ‘human’ (ie flawed) is not necessarily what The Gay Gatekeepers want straight culture to see.”

Ellis wrote of GLAAD: “An organisation holding an awards ceremony that they think represents all gays and also feels that they can choose which gays can and cannot be a member of the party is, on the fact of it, ridiculous. The fact remains that if you aren’t presenting yourself as a happy homosexual promoting healthy mainstream gay values and pimping for GLAAD, then you’re somehow defaming The Cause.”

The novelist said in April that he was banned from attending the GLAAD awards ceremony in Los Angeles because of his previous outspoken remarks.

In April, he tweeted: “I like the idea of ‘Glee’ but why is it that every time I watch an episode I feel like I’ve stepped into a puddle of HIV?”

Ellis sparked outrage last August after he said it was “ludicrous” to cast gay actor Matt Bomer to play the straight male lead in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey.

One month later Ellis defended celebrity heiress Paris Hilton for describing gay men as “disgusting”.

Hilton was secretly recorded making anti-gay remarks to a gay friend in the back of a taxis in New York as her friend logged on to gay dating app Grindr.

Ellis tweeted: “I kind of agree with Paris Hilton…As someone who has used Grindr Paris Hilton isn’t that far off.”
