Texas: Anti-trans marriage law gains Senate approval
Senators in the US state of Texas passed a bill earlier this week that would dramatically affect transgender residents seeking a marriage licence.
S-B-12-18 would prevent people from obtaining a licence with a document that lacks photographic identification.
This includes an affidavit of gender confirmation surgery, which would essentially prohibit transgender Texans from marrying people of the opposite sex.
Equality Texas says it hopes to stall the legislation, which still needs to pass both a House panel and the full chamber by Tuesday 21 May – the deadline for the House to consider the Senate proposals.
Meanwhile, an anti-gay state representative is seeking to revive a measure that would allow student university groups to ignore a school’s non-discrimination policy.
Republican Representative Matt Krause has been denounced by Equality Texas as advocating “tax-funded hate speech.”
