Exclusive: Lorraine Kelly says ‘It’s Time’ for equal marriage and for all people to be treated equally
Breakfast TV star Lorraine Kelly has become the latest public figure to speak out on why she supports equal marriage in a message recorded as part of the Equality Network’s It’s Time campaign.
Speaking from her dressing room at ITV Studios on London’s Southbank Lorraine said: “I support equal marriage because I don’t see why you wouldn’t. To me it’s all about celebrating love, and if two people love each other they should be able to get married in front of their friends and family and have a fantastic day, and just declare their love to the world. It’s a complete no-brainer. It’s a wonderful, wonderful thing to do.”
The ITV Daybreak presenter added: “I think equality generally is really, really important, and this is part of that. We’re all equal, we’re all the same, and we all should be treated exactly the same. I don’t understand why there has been such a huge debate about this, for me it’s simple – if people love each other, they should be allowed to get married. It doesn’t matter whether you’re gay, it doesn’t matter whether you’re straight – it’s about loving each other, and surely that’s something to celebrate.”
Lorraine, who lives in Dundee, also urged people to support the Equality Network’s It’s Time campaign by saying: “If you feel really strongly about it then get in touch with your MSP and make sure that your voice is heard, because that’s really important and it’s the only way that we’ll get change – and for goodness sake it’s 2013; it’s about time.”
The leader of the Scottish Conservatives Ruth Davidson and Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie have both recorded videos for the Equality Network’s It’s Time campaign.
The campaign is modelled on PinkNews’ Out4Marriage campaign.
Responding to Lorraine Kelly’s video, Benjamin Cohen, the founder of PinkNews and Out4Marriage said: “We’re so pleased that one of Scotland’s biggest stars has joined the campaign for equal marriage north of the border. It’s important that gay couples are able to marry which ever part of the UK they live in.”
