Video: Disgraced US Navy chaplain says if you are gay ‘you should be discriminated against’
A disgraced former Navy chaplain has spoken out on his radio show to say that gay people “should be discriminated against” for being sinners, and cited Martin Luther King Jr in saying so.
In the video posted by Right Wing Watch, Gordon Klingenschmitt voiced his opposition to an anti-discrimination ordinance in San Antonio, claiming that it would ban Christians from working in public office, or for the city.
On his Pray in Jesus Name radio show, he quoted Martin Luther King’s famous “judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character” speech, going on to claim that “if your heart is full of corruption or sin or immorality – in this case, homosexuality – then you should be discriminated against.”
He went on to speak on the proposed law, saying that it should be right for people to be able to “discriminate against character”, in order to discriminate against gay people. He claimed the law would have found Martin Luther King guilty of discrimination.
“When these confusing statutes now try to redefine discrimination and say that you can no longer discriminate against character … that anyone who discriminates against character is guilty of discrimination and therefore ought to be discriminated against, they’re actually saying Martin Luther King himself ought to be punished for his views, and that’s not right,” he said.
