US: Women’s basketball star protests against same-sex marriage
A Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) player has spoke out against an LGBT anti-discrimination bill in San Antonio, saying she does not support same-sex marriages.
Sophia Young, who is a forward for Silver Stars basketball team, tweeted her views against the bill on Wednesday, with a message that read: “Should San Antonio be a city that allows same sex marriage?? I vote NO.”
She also participated in a pray-in protest against the bill.
While the WNBA supported Ms Young’s right to speak, the league said it did not agree with her views.
WNBA president Laurel Richie said: “Sophia has the right to express her point of view, however, I do not share her view.
“The WNBA supports diversity and we are committed to the equal and fair treatment of all people.”

“My parents didn’t know at the time,” said the former Baylor Bears star. “I hadn’t come out completely. It was kind of like, YOU KNOW … I just hadn’t said it. My dad and my mom have always told me, ‘Be who you are.’ At the time, they probably weren’t sure what I was interpreting that as.”
