Ellen Page’s incredible coming out speech: I am gay and I am tired of lying by omission

The Hollywood actress Ellen Page, who came to public attention with her Oscar nominated role in the film Juno has come out, speaking at a conference for LGBT teenagers in Las Vegas.

Page was attending an event organised by the Human Rights Campaign saying: “I am tired of hiding and I am tired of lying by omission.”

She explained: “I’m here today because I am gay” to whoops from the audience. Adding:”And because…maybe I can make a difference to help others have an easier and more hopeful time. Regardless, for me, I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility.”

“My spirit suffered, my mental health suffered and my relationships suffered,” she told the audience. “And I’m standing here today, with all of you, on the other side of all that pain.”

The actress is to star in the dramatic adaption of the documentary Freeheld, which tells the story of a terminally ill lesbian police detective who battles to transfer her pension rights to her domestic partner.
