Family Research Council: Allowing gays in the military has caused its ‘absolute destruction’

The executive vice-president of the Family Research Council has said that the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell in 2011 has caused the ‘absolute destruction’ of the US military.

According to Right Wing Watch, Jerry Boykin made the comments this week on the Christian anti-gay group’s ‘Washington Watch’ podcast.

He said: “Clearly these guys that are in power today, that are in positions of real authority in our military, particularly those in the joint chiefs of staff, have agreed to support the President’s agenda.”

“What you’re seeing is the absolute destruction of our military readiness and our military morale because the leadership in our military has not been willing to stand up to the President.”

In 2010, the group claimed that repealing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, which prohibited gay troops from serving openly, would lead to the spread of HIV among troops.

A study conducted by researchers at the University of California found that allowing gay troops had caused no negative impact, and had “enhanced the military’s ability to pursue its mission”.

Despite the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, trans people are still banned from openly serving.
