TV host Bill Maher has said that a ‘gay mafia’ was responsible for the ousting of Mozilla’s CEO over donations to anti-gay marriage groups.

In an online segment of his political talk show Real Time yesterday, the host said that Brendan Eich, who resigned on Thursday after it emerged he had donated $1000 (£600) to pass California’s Proposition 8 in 2008, had been ‘whacked’.

Maher said: “I think there is a gay mafia. I think if you cross them, you do get whacked.”

Panellist and Forbes journalist Carrie Sheffield also said that it was unfair to hold Eich’s donations against him, as “he gave it when President Obama was still against gay marriage.”

Before stepping down as CEO, Eich had refused to rule out making further donations to anti-gay marriage groups in future.

Mozilla had faced a boycott from several LGBT groups, supported by OKCupid, and now faces a retaliative boycott from conservative Christian group the National Organisation for Marriage.
