Dolly Parton has said she wants to record a dance anthem that her gay fans can “relate” to.

The singer told Digital Spy: “At some point I would like to do a dance record and I have several songs that are very positive towards the gay community.

“I have a song called ‘Just A Wee Bit Gay’. It’s a great little dance tune, it’s funny and it’s got a lot of comic in it.

“I do write a lot of songs along those lines with people that are different and are just themselves.”

The country legend has often dismissed speculation about her own sexuality, despite marrying her husband Carl Dean in 1966.

“I’m not gay. If I was gay, I would have come out of the closet just a-flying,” she said in 2012.

She has always maintained her support for the gay community, however.

Same-sex marriage is currently illegal in Dolly’s home state of Tennessee, and in April a US federal appeals panel has reversed an earlier decision to force the state to recognise the marriages of three Tennessee gay couples.

She joked in April that gay people “should suffer [through marriage] just like us heterosexuals”.
