The iconic Royal Vauxhall Tavern bar has been awarded ‘listed community asset’ status.

The Tavern, which is one of London’s oldest gay pubs, was recently sold to a new owner, which publican James Lindsay said was “necessary in order to allow RVT to continue”.

The decision came after a period of uncertainty about the future of the Tavern – but some regulars feared the move would lead to changes.

Lambeth Council today announced that it had listed the venue in its register of community assets

The move means that if the venue is put up for sale again, the local community will be given six months to prepare a bid to buy it.

Councillor Jack Hopkins, Cabinet Member for Jobs and Growth, said: “I’m delighted that we have been able to add this venue to the list. It is now officially an asset of community value.

“This will help protect the Royal Vauxhall Tavern’s status as a key nightclub and LGBT cultural venue for both Lambeth, and the whole of London.”

Broadcaster and comedian Paul O’Grady performed at the RVT as his comedic alter ego Lily Savage in the 1980s, and credited it for his success.

Mr Lindsay said recently: “RVT will undergo a full refurbishment both internal and external, which will see the first floor being opened as a wine and champagne bar with a new toilet provision at first floor level.

“I hope that all of us who care about the future of the RVT will support this.”
