Neil Patrick Harris is stepping into the shoes of Ant and Dec – fronting a variety show based on Saturday Night Takeaway.

The actor confirmed today he would front the new variety series for NBC, after long-running sitcom How I Met Your Mother ended in May.

He said: “As I watched the show, I couldn’t stop smiling. Now that I’ve seen many seasons, my face hurts. It’s a game changer.

“Nothing like this has been done before, and its unique structure fits right into my random skill set. I can’t wait to roll up my sleeves and have some fun!”

The 10-episode series will closely follow the format of Ant and Dec’s original, featuring hidden camera pranks, comedy sketches, celebrity guest stars, and musical numbers.

However, it won’t air on a Saturday night, and will likely take a different name.

Paul Telegdy of NBC Entertainment said: “All of us here at NBC have been dying to work with Neil, as we’ve watched him brilliantly host the Tonys and Emmys.

“This series will suit his extraordinary talents perfectly. He is a versatile and thrilling talent for us to welcome into the NBC family.”

The Dr Horrible star was recently announced as the 2015 Oscars host – meaning the ceremony will be hosed by an out performer for the second year running, following Ellen DeGeneres this year.
