WATCH: Ian McKellen narrates trailer for film to tackle homophobia in sport
Sir Ian McKellen has lent his voice to the trailer for the trailer of this short film, which aims to tackle the issue of homophobia in sport.
The film ‘Wonderkid’, which is currently being funded on Kickstarter, follows a young gay footballer as he struggles to pave his way in the industry.
It has already raised over £25,000, is now fully funded, and has been backed by the Kevin Spacey Foundation, hate crime charity Galop and dozens of others.
“If you consider that racist abuse from the terraces is front page news when it happens and heavily punished, homophobia doesn’t seem to be taken as seriously, even though the law states they’re equally severe,” said Rhys Chapman, director of Wonderkid.
“I think the rest of the world has been under a lot of pressure to change, whereas football has maybe avoided it slightly, because the key decision makers have stayed the same – it’s still a very middle class, white male environment.
“But I think most homophobia cases today purely come down to a lack of education.”
The film’s expected release will be in September 2015.
