A newspaper actually used this headline for a tennis match
An Australian newspaper has lamented the defeat of a local tennis player with a rather unique headline.
Bernard Tomic was knocked out of the French Open yesterday in the second round, by his fellow Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis.
Kokkinakis took back the match 3-6 3-6 6-3 6-4 8-6 – hitting back hard after losing the first two sets.
Free Melbourne paper mX seized on the match with a genius headline – reporting that “Bernie Chokes on Kokk”.
The outlandish headline has spread on Twitter and social media.
Unfortunately, there isn’t likely to be much more Kokk for anyone in the tournament – as his third round match is with Serbian champion Novak Djokovic.
Andy Murray’s tennis coach Amélie Mauresmo recently announced that she is expecting a baby with her partner.
The French player – who has served as head coach to the UK’s top player Andy Murray since 2014 – announced on Twitter that she was expecting her first child with her partner.
Ms Mauresmo came out as a lesbian in 1999, after becoming the world #1 ranked female player.
Female champ Martina Navratilova recently questioned the lack of openly gay male players, given the prevalence of out women in the sport.
She said: “On the tennis court, I would certainly like to see more players come out.
“I can’t believe that there has never been a male player that has taken that step.
“With each passing celebrity coming out or athlete, it becomes less of a big deal and that’s eventually what we want it to be, for it not just to matter.”
