Peter Paige: We are serious about bringing back US Queer as Folk
One of the stars of the US version of Queer as Folk has confirmed that proposals to bring the show back from the dead are “serious”.
The original Channel 4 series ran for two years in the UK in 1999, while the US Showtime adaptation aired for five years.
Speaking at an event to celebrate ten years since the US show ended, showrunners Ron Cowen and Daniel Lipman signalled their interest in bringing it back to screens.
Speaking following the interview, Peter Paige – who appeared as Emmett Honeycutt on the series – said he’d “love” the chance for the show to come back.
He told Entertainment Weekly: “We were all serious. We’d love to do it. It’s not our choice, you know what I mean?
“There are other powers that be that control that material and have to put up the millions and millions of dollars and have to decide if that’s the business model they want to engage in at any given time.
“It’s amazing to think 10 years after we ended, the show is still being found and still circulating around the world. It’s just incredible.”
Paige is the co-creator of ABC comedy series The Fosters, however, and he admitted finding the time for the reboot could be a challenge.
At the event, Daniel Lipman had said: “We’d be open to it, depending on the venue of a reboot.
“I think what would be interesting would be to explore our characters who are now in their 40s and bringing in a new generation and seeing how that mix would go.
“As an example, we were talking if Gus — Brian and Lindsay’s child who is now say, 17, the age that Justin was — and if he was gay. How different his views would be from his father.
“That kind of thing would be an interesting thing to explore. People who are now mid-teens and 20s and possibly in their 30s have a very different view of what it’s like being gay.”
