Susan Sarandon: My son likes to wear dresses and blur gender lines
Actress Susan Sarandon has revealed that one of her sons blurs gender lines – and likes to wear dresses on stage with his band.
The Oscar-winning actress spoke about her 23-year-old son Miles while appearing at a TrevorLIVE event in support of anti-bullying charity the Trevor Project.
She told People: “As a mother, I know how difficult it is to survive the teenage years intact and the socialization process – if you step out of line, it’s so difficult.
“And there are so many kids these days who are questioning, gay or transgender, who have a very tough time and it could be very dangerous for them.
“I think it’s really great that we are having all these conversations and getting kids to understand that there is somewhere we can go to talk it over.”
She added that her son likes to “colour outside the lines” of gender.
The actress said: “My son Miles is a musician and a DJ and sometimes when his band performs they all wear dresses, and he has long hair.
“I think the more crayons you have in your box to colour outside the lines, the more exciting it is.”
Sarandon is a strong supporter of same-sex marriage and LGBT rights, filming a video for the Human Rights Campaign last year calling for equality.
She said at the time: “While marriage might not be my thing, if it’s your thing you damn well ought to be able to have it equally and unequivocally.
“The America I want to live in celebrates diversity and believes in equal rights for all families no matter what what they look like.”
However, she claimed previously that LGBT media charity GLAAD is “out of control” – after it condemned the use of the word “tranny” on Glee.
