Uganda has said it wants to ban countries with same-sex marriage from adopting its children.

The Ugandan Minister for State for East African Affairs Shem Bageine, has said he wants to ban foreigners from countries with same-sex marriage from adopting children from the five member states of the East African Community.

Addressing the members of the East African legislative Assembly, which was sitting in the Ugandan Parliament, Bageine said: “Should our students be adopted by them? And because of that, if we say no then we don’t get aid? No, I don’t accept that.”

The EAC consists of the Republics of Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, the United Republic of Tanzania, and the Republic of Uganda.

Uganda is not the first country to propose such a ban.

Back in 2014, Russia banned foreign gay couples from adopting its orphans.

A small but visible group of people earlier this month took to the streets of Uganda to celebrate Pride.

This year’s event had special significance – it has been a year since the controversial anti-gay law was scrapped – giving marchers even more reason to celebrate.
