Zachary Quinto says he gets more work since coming out
The openly gay star says that although being typecast is a challenge, its one that he is more than ready to overcome.
Since coming out four years ago, Zachary Quinto has voiced his opinion on various aspects of life in the LGBT community.
Just last week, the star once again discussed controversial comments he made regarding gay men and how their “complacency” and “laziness” has led to a rise in HIV.
The comments were met with an understandable level of outrage and disdain, but during a recent interview promoting his new film – Hitman: Agent 47 – the actor claimed that coming out and growing more vocal about issues concerning LGBT people has actually led to an increase in roles he is offered.
“I work more now than I ever did when I was in the closet,” he told The Telegraph recently, “and I’m doing a wider range and variety of roles than I ever did before I came out.
However, that does not mean that being an openly gay actor in Hollywood is easy – the Star Trek star also acknowledged the lack of diversity in the industry, and the loneliness his unique position often brings.
“For me, personally, it’s interesting, because I looked around when I got Star Trek, and I said to myself, ‘Who could I look to for guidance for how to navigate this path that I’m on?’ And there wasn’t anybody.”
And – unfortunately – he says this hasn’t changed.
“I look around and say ‘OK, yes, there’s a lot of gay actors that are open, many more now than there were 10 years ago.
“But I still feel like I’m occupying kind of a unique space,” he added – although he does not intend to allow this to effect his career going forward.
“I feel like that’s what I need to keep demanding of myself and what I need to keep demanding of the industry.”
