Tasteless Caitlyn Jenner Halloween costume sparks outrage
The advert for the outfit guarantees “laughs from all your friends”.
Caitlyn Jenner garnered global praise earlier this year, after she bravely came out as transgender on the cover of Vanity Fair – instantly becoming a role model for trans communities all over the world.
However, a costume company has decided to take advantage of the situation by mocking the star’s transition – offering customers the chance to indulge in a little “Vanity” of their own.
The “Call Me Caitlyn” costume is being sold at Any Time Costumes and Wholesale Halloween Costumes – where the outfit seems to be aimed at men who want to dress as a trans woman for the night.
The description of the costume makes a further mockery of Ms Jenner, saying: “If you want some “Vanity” this Halloween then try wearing the Unisex Call Me Caitlyn Costume.
“You probably won’t break any Twitter records when you wear this outfit like Caitlyn did when she first made her account, but you’ll be sure to get a few laughs out of your friends and the other guests at the get together.”
A representative from Spirit Halloween – the company that manufactured the costumes – attempted to justify the design by claiming the costume’s aim was to celebrate Caityn Jenner.
“Caitlyn Jenner has proven to be the most important real-life superhero of the year. Spirit Halloween is proud to carry the costume that celebrates her,” she told the NY Times.
She also said another costume made by the company – the Call Me Caitlyn Mr. Olympian Costume Kit – has been discontinued due to customer complaints.
However, this did not stop fans of Ms Jenner taking to Twitter to express their disgust.
“I will personally fight anyone wearing a Caitlyn Jenner Halloween costume this year,” threatened one user.
“Am I the only one who’s offended that Spirit Halloween will send a Caitlyn Jenner Halloween costume this year?” asked another.
The former Olympian has received international recognition since coming out, and has been supported by family, fans and fellow celebrities alike – including actor Eddie Redmayne, who voiced his support for her last week.
Unfortunately, she has also faced criticism and been victim to both transphobia and ridicule – including a transphobic rap from the eternally homophobic hip hop star Eminem.
