Anti-gay clerk appeals against contempt ruling after refusing to marry gays
The anti-gay Kentucky county clerk who continues to refuse to allow gay couples to marry has appealed against a contempt ruling which has left her in jail.
Kim Davis was held in contempt of court on Thursday for disobeying several orders instructing her to stop discriminating, and to issue marriage licences to same-sex couples.
She declined the offer of a deal which would have freed her, if she allowed her deputies to issue the marriage licences. Her deputies were later ordered to start issuing the marriage licences anyway.
Lawyers for Davis on Sunday lodged an appeal, but did not give reasons for why she should be released from jail.
Her lawyer, Mat Staver, has also said the marriage licences issued while she is in jail are “not worth the paper they are written on”.
Staver, as well as calling the hearing on Thursday a “charade” has accused Judge Bunning of making up his mind before the hearing began.
Davis has refused to give up her $80k a year elected position.
Found guilty of contempt of court, Kim Davis was remanded in custody by federal marshals last week.
The Rowan County clerk has continually ignored court orders instructing her to stop discriminating against gay couples.
She approached the US Supreme Court, asking for an order allowing her to continue turning away gay couples – the court declined.
