Neil Patrick Harris TV show cancelled after just eight episodes
A TV variety show starring Neil Patrick Harris has been axed by NBC.
The out actor might have carried How I Met Your Mother for nine seasons, but unfortunately his latest venture hasn’t even made it to nine episodes.
The star’s light entertainment variety show, ‘Best Time Ever’, was launched in September as a remake of the UK’s popular ‘Saturday Night Takeaway’ format.
The show has featured guests including Reese Witherspoon, Alec Baldwin and Jack Black – but has been axed this week following dwindling ratings.
Paul Telegdy of NBC told Variety: “We are extremely proud of the work Neil and the producers did on ‘Best Time Ever’. People rewarded us for taking the risk of trying something different.
“It was an incredibly complicated and sophisticated form of television to put on a live show on a weekly basis. We’re proud of Neil for giving it his all and we have steely resolve to work together on something new.”
The network is working with Harris on a new project, though details are still up in the air.
The TV host recently admitted he doesn’t expect to host the Oscars again, after his routine this year received a mixed reception.
He said: “I don’t know that my family nor my soul could take it. It’s a beast.
“It was fun to check off the list, but for the amount of time spent and the understandable opinionated response, I don’t know that it’s a delightful balance to do every year or even again.
“I didn’t keep up with it obsessively, but it was interesting to see just what people thought landed and didn’t.
“It’s so difficult for one who’s simply watching the show to realize just how much time and concession and compromise and explanation has gone into almost every single thing.”
