Is Star Wars planning its first gay love story?
Are the writers of the biggest franchise of all time about to break the last blockbuster taboo?
A recent fan theory has suggested that the writers of the ‘The Force Awakens’ – officially the biggest film of all time – are setting up an LGBT romance between two of the film’s main characters.
Fans believe that it is only a matter of time before one of the film’s leading male protagonists declares his love for the other, after the cast were asked about any potential romance storylines in the upcoming movies.
Whilst appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres show, fans say that Oscar Issac – who plays pilot Poe Dameron – hinted at a possible love story between himself and John Boyega’s reformed stormtrooper Finn.
“I think it’s very subtle romance that’s happening,” Issac tells the host, refusing to specify which characters is talking about.
“You know, you have to just look very close — you have to watch it a few times to see the little hints. But there was.”
If the theory proves correct, then it would certainly be a bold move by film-makers – who have never featured an openly LGBT character in any Star Wars film.
However, the sci-fi franchise is not the only one yet to do so – with Star Trek legend George Takei recently explaining why there were no gay characters in Star Trek either.
In September, Star Wars writer Chuck Wending issued an epic response to critics who were unhappy with the introduction of a major new gay character into the Star Wars universe.
Wending revealed in a recent interview that the franchise would be introducing the character in his new novel – Star Wars: Aftermath.
Fans were quick to point out, however, that lesbian jedi Juhani, featured in the 2003 game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – making her technically the universe’s first gay hero.
