Outrage sparked after comedian claims Jesus Christ was gender fluid
Sarah Silverman courted controversy recently by making a joke about Jesus Christ.
The comic and actress posted a tweet on Christmas day to her eight million followers, claiming that “birthday boy” Jesus was actually gender fluid.
“MERRY CHRISTMAS! Jesus was gender fluid,” she wrote.
However, many failed to find her festive joke a funny one, with some users reacting rather strongly to the controversial comic’s Christmas wishes.
“@SarahKSilverman Christians “turn the other cheek.” Easy to make “jokes” about their religion. Take a stab at Islam and Mohammed, THAT’S edgy,” one user wrote.
Another user attacked Silverman’s talent, writing: “@SarahKSilverman Jesus was about as gender fluid as YOU are funny… #idiot.”
However, Silverman ignored most of the tweets, taking time to respond to just a couple of her harsher critics, whose responses ranged from violent threats to sexist comments.
“I was in Wales with my boyfriend and his family,” she shared.
“I was sitting in the car on the way to his sister’s and figured I’d send out a Christmas tweet.
“Decided to add on a word from our collective new vocabulary since, to me, it’s funny, beautiful, and true in that He is all of us.”
The Jewish comic added: “The absolute best is when the (adorable) haters write ‘I’d love to see you make fun of Jews!’ Um, hi, have we met??”
A Catholic church in New York was recently forced to remove a sign that read ‘Jesus had two dads and he turned out fine’.
Rev. Roy Herberger, of St Columbia-Brigid Roman Catholic Church in Buffalo, New York, put up the comical message in November.
The priest says the message wasn’t actually intended to support LGBT rights, and was meant to be an encouraging children who have heterosexual step-parents.
However, he was besieged with complaints from parishioners and other hardcore Catholics who interpreted it as an endorsement of same-sex parenting, which Church doctrine condemns.
His boss was among those who weren’t amused by the message – ordering the sign to be removed.
