Lady Gaga and Sam Smith win big at Golden Globes
Award winning singer Lady Gaga has received her first major award for acting at this weekend’s Golden Globes.
Gaga won the Best Actress Award for her performance as The Countess in American Horror Story: Hotel.
She joined singer Sam Smith, who added another Golden Globe to his already impressive collection, after winning the Best Original Song award for Bond theme ‘Writing On The Wall’.
Both stars seemed genuinely surprised by their wins, with Gaga referencing fellow gay icon Cher during her acceptance speech.
“I feel like Cher in that John Patrick Shanley film Moonstruck right now,” Gaga told the A-List audience at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
“This is one of the greatest moments of my life. I have to thank Ryan Murphy. You’re just a wonderful human being.
“You have believed in me so much and been such a good friend.”
She added that she had always “wanted to be an actress before I wanted to be a singer but music worked out first.”
The Born This Way star also thanked her co-stars, including Matt Bomer, as well as her family.
“I love you so much. The things I have put my body through and my mind through when I’m working, ever since I was I was a child, I can’t even do this on my own. You take care of me.”
Smith, meanwhile, also shared his bewilderment at winning an award.
The four-time Grammy winner won the best original song award with Jimmy Napes for Writing’s On The Wall – the theme recent James Bond outing, Spectre.
“I honestly, on a real level, I genuinely didn’t think we were going to get this,” Smith said as he accepted the award.
“This has been the most interesting night of my life.”
Kate Winslet – who recently took part in a stunning androgynous photo shoot – also won Best Supporting Actress for her role in Steve Jobs.
However, the night was less celebratory for The Danish Girl, which failed to pick up any of the awards it was nominated for – including Best Actor for Eddie Redmayne.
There were no awards for Todd Haynes’s critically acclaimed love story Carol either – although both film’s may have better luck at this year’s Baftas, after receiving a host of nominations last week.
