Trans sitcom Boy Meets Girl returning for a second series
BBC Two’s charming and ground-breaking comedy Boy Meets Girl will be back for a second series.
The sitcom – which revolves around the developing relationship between 40-year-old trans woman Judy and 26-year-old Leo – will return later this year.
The second series will see Judy – played by trans actress Rebecca Root – befriend a young trans man, while Leo embraces the world of work.
The show will begin shooting in Manchester next month.
“This series demonstrates comedy’s unique ability to bring insight, warmth and understanding to challenging subjects, and encapsulates the three bedrocks of the BBC’s duty to inform, educate and entertain,” the BBC’s Shane Allen said of the show’s return.
“A welcome return for this warm-hearted love story with a twist.
“Expect lots more out and out bawdy comedy alongside some very tender and touching moments in this very modern take on a rom-com.”
The show made history when it became the first BBC comedy to prominently feature transgender issues.
It was first commissioned last year, following a talent search aiming to develop a show focussed on the trans community.
The first series received a broadly positive reaction from critics and fans – however, some criticised the stilted dialogue.
Boy Meets Girl was created by Trans Comedy Award winner Elliott Kerrigan along with Simon Carlyle and Andrew Mettam.
Fellow cast members include Harry Hepple, Denise Welch of Waterloo Road, Janine Duvitski of Benidorm, Nigel Betts of Emmerdale, Lizzie Roper of Hollyoaks and Jonny Dixon of Coronation Street.
