Chair graced by JK Rowling’s bum sells at auction for $400k
A chair which had extended contact with JK Rowling’s behind has sold at auction for $400,000.
The chair, which was picked up for free by the famed Harry Potter author before she was famous, was sat on as she wrote the first two Potter books.
The 1930s chair was one of four mismatched pieces she got in Edinburgh.
It was originally auctioned for Rowling’s charity in 2002, and was hand-painted by the author.
Because it was hand-painted, auctioneer James Gannon said it was more valuable.
“O, you may not find me pretty but don’t judge on what you see” it reads “I wrote Harry Potter while sitting on this chair”.
The sale also included a letter from JK Rowling which reads that the chair was hard on her back.
“I was given four mismatched dining room chairs in 1995 and this was the comfiest one, which is why it ended up stationed permanently in front of my typewriter, supporting me while I typed out Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. My nostalgic side is quite sad to see it go, but my back isn’t.”
Despite forking out nearly $400,000 for the chair, the buyer decided to remain anonymous.
Gerald Gray, the seller of the chair, bought it on eBay in 2009.
He said he plans to donate 10 percent of the amount to Rowling’s Lumos charity.
Last month, JK Rowling shared some of her rejection letters, and they are pretty inspiring.
