After playing crucial role in equal marriage, Edie Windsor now wants to teach queer women to code
After playing a huge part in the effort to legalise equal marriage in the US, Edie Windsor has now set out to educate queer women in tech.
Windsor was a plaintiff in the lawsuit which struck down the US’s Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), back in 2014.
Now a project she supports, and which has been named after her, is raising funds to help get more queer women to be tech business leaders.
The Edie Windsor Coding Scholarship Fund is set up to bring more queer women into Silicon Valley.
It hopes to get one queer female coder onto the team of many startups.
A crowdfunding campaign has already raised $54,000 towards the $100k target.
The more the Lesbians Who Code campaign raises, the more queer women will benefit from it.
Through including queer women in processes, it hopes to make everyday apps more inclusive, and make tech workforces more powerful.
Another aim of the project is to have women make up 50 percent of tech startup workforces, not 20 percent, which it is estimated currently.
Successful applicants to the Edie Windsor Coding Scholarship Fund will have at least 50 percent of tuition covered.
It aims to raise more money year on year to send more women to learn to code, as well as connecting queer women to a network of mentors.
