Caitlyn Jenner claims Donald Trump is ‘very much’ backing LGBT rights
Caitlyn Jenner has claimed that Donald Trump is “very much” behind the LGBT community, after he claimed to be a “friend of the gays”.
Mr Trump was previously a lukewarm supporter of LGBT rights, but has repeatedly changed his stance repeatedly during the campaign in a bid to appeal to the broad Republican base.
The presumptive Republican Presidential nominee has pledged to appoint justices to repeal equal marriage, come out against federal anti-discrimination protections, and repeatedly flip-flopped on transgender rights.
Weighing in on a wave of bathroom bills, Trump initially claimed he had “no problem” with trans people like Caitlyn Jenner using the toilet, but quickly retracted his stance – insisting states like North Carolina should be allowed to keep their anti-transgender laws.
Trump also sparked outrage in the wake of Orlando by claiming a Hillary Clinton victory would lead to the mass murder of LGBT people – but Caitlyn Jenner herself seems to still think he’s a good pro-LGBT candidate.
Speaking to STAT News, she said: “I’m on the conservative Republican side. I’m not excited with what Obama has done to the economy, to our Constitution, all that kind of stuff.
“But as far as the transgender community, they’ve actually been very good.
“Everybody looks at the Democrats as being better with these issues. But Trump seems to be very much for women. He seems very much behind the LGBT community because of what happened in North Carolina with the bathroom issue. He backed the LGBT community.
“But in Trump’s case, there’s a lot more unknowns. With Hillary, you pretty much know what you’re gonna get with the LGBT community.”
Jenner has repeatedly come under fire in the past for her conservative views.
Her documentary series I Am Cait saw her friends reading PinkNews articles about anti-trans Republicans in order to convince her to change her mind.
