Bakery barraged with abuse over Ken doll princess cake
A bakery in Sacramento has been barraged with abuse for filling a request for a Ken doll princess cake.
The Freeport Bakery in Sacramento had fulfilled the custom birthday cake request, made for a party in the local area.
The cake was baked with an elaborate pink dress moulded around a Ken doll, who was customised with earrings and a tiara.
The bakery shared a picture on Facebook after finishing the cake, quipping: “Ken’s looking good.”
However, the picture was shared by anti-LGBT groups who interpreted the cake as support for “transgenderism”.
The business was barraged with homophobic and transphobic abuse – some accusing the bakery of supporting “mental illness”.
Other commenters insisted they would be boycotting the bakery because the cake offended their “Christian values”.
Marlene Goetzeler, co-owner of the bakery, told Fox40: “Naively, I guess I just thought this is a really cool cake, and look at how great they did with the buttercream. What’s wrong with a Ken cake?”
“I started getting some negative comments… Then a couple days later I noticed there was a big dip in unlikes. I was kind of surprised.
“I was shocked that somebody would be offended.”
However, the cake apparently went down well with the people who ordered it.
The bakery owner said that the customers had been “thrilled” with the cake despite the nasty online reaction from some.
