Trans sitcom Boy Meets Girl axed by BBC
Trans sitcom Boy Meets Girl has been axed after just two series, the BBC has confirmed.
The show was first commissioned in 2014, following an exhaustive BBC talent search aiming to develop a show focussed on the transgender community.
Starring trans actress Rebecca Root, the comedy revolved around the developing relationship between 40-year-old trans woman Judy and 26-year-old cis man Leo (Harry Hepple).
It has received a broadly positive reaction from critics and fans – but after the second series failed to prove a ratings hit this year, the BBC has confirmed it will not be coming back for a third run.
A spokesperson said: “We are tremendously proud of BBC Two’s Boy Meets Girl, but after two series feel the story has reached a natural end point.
“We would like to thank the creative team behind the show and of course the entire cast.”
Speaking to comedy outlet Chortle, Root said she felt like there was still more story left to tell.
She said: “Everyone’s really sorry that the show’s come to its end. We’re all very disappointed.
“The way I see shows going is that you establish your territory with the first series, you consolidate with the second and then you develop things in the third series – you can then open it up and really get into the meat of the story.
“I felt that while series two didn’t have quite the same tone as series one it was establishing a level.
“We were all looking forward to series three to get going… I felt that they were selling us a bit short by pulling it after two.”
The series was created by Trans Comedy Award winner Elliott Kerrigan along with Simon Carlyle and Andrew Mettam.
The show also stars Harry Hepple, Denise Welch of Waterloo Road, Janine Duvitski of Benidorm, Nigel Betts of Emmerdale, Lizzie Roper of Hollyoaks and Jonny Dixon of Coronation Street.
