Cher is set to return to acting in what might be her most important role yet

The film is set in Flint, Michigan, and will be about the water contamination crisis that residents in the county are facing.

Cher will play a resident in Flint who has a family that is directly impacted by the water which has been poisoned with lead.

The drama, which will be based of a series of real events that have taken place, will explore the crisis, politics and poor management that caused the water contamination.

Always the advocate, the singer has been vocal about the crisis and has donated vast amounts of clean drinking water to the residents who are affected by the water.

Deadline Hollywood reported that Cher will star in the film alongside Craig Zadan, Neil Meron and Katie Couric.

Oscar-nominated director Bruce Beresford is rumoured to direct the film, which has not yet been given formal confirmation but is expected to begin production in the spring.

This is just the second time the singer will have made a TV movie in her career. 21 years ago, she starred in “If These Walls Could Talk”, a role that won her a Golden Globe award nomination.

The 70-year-old hinted at the possibility she would be releasing new music following the US elections.

The pop sensation took to Twitter in August to say she’d been in the studio and was looking forward to working on a new “CD” once she had worked on the first leg of Hillary’s campaign.

In her first tweet, she said: “Just walked out of the studio. Had a blast [sic], put two songs down. Was dead from fittings. Wish I could go in jeans and high heels, but shade is cold [sic] burr.”

The following night, the 70-year-old suggested she had brought her song tally up to four, by recording a further two tunes.

As yet it’s unclear of what kind of music Cher is working on or what the new album will be called.

She has previously suggested that she would cover songs by men, such as; Elvis, Bruce Springsteen and the Eagles.
