Bronski Beat keyboardist Larry Steinbachek dies aged 56
The keyboard player from the band Bronski Beat Larry Steinbachek, has died aged 56.
Steinbachek died last month after battling with cancer, his sister has revealed.
He formed the lineup of Bronski Beat in 1983 alongside Jimmy Somerville and Steve Bronski, as the trio shared a flat in Brixton, London.
The band often dealt with issues facing the LGBT community including prejudice, anti-gay violence and discrimination against the LGBT community.
They famously performed at the Pits and Perverts concert at the Electric Ballroom in support of the Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners campaign.
The band’s ‘Age of Consent’ album listed in its sleeve the age of consent for gay sex in various jurisdictions.
Smalltown Boy touched on issues faced by someone growing up gay.
Steinbachek died surrounded by family and friends, his sister said, and his battle with cancer was short.
He had continued to make music with Bronski after Somerville left the group in 1985. He later moved to Amsterdam in 1994 and continued to make music.
