A superfan of Judy Garland paid over $15,000 to be buried beside her…it didn’t go quite to plan
A superfan of legendary actress Judy Garland dished out over $15,000 to be buried beside her, only to be told her body has been moved.
The Wizard of Oz star was buried in the Ferncliff Mausoleum in New York after she died in 1969 at the age of 47.
The fan spent $15,500 to be buried in a spot near the actress, but on Thursday it was revealed her body is to be moved to California as the site doesn’t have enough space for the rest of the family.
Daughter Liza Minnelli had her mother moved to the Hollywood Forever Cemetery where there is enough room for the 70-year-old and her two siblings Lorna Luft, 64, and Joey Luft, 61 to be buried together.
A Ferncliff cemetery manager said he was unsure what the fan would do with the site now.
“It’s funny because there’s a man who specifically flew in from California because he is a big fan of hers,” he said.
“He purchased a plot near her so when he dies he could be next to her. I don’t know what he is going to do now.”
A Hollywood Forever spokeswoman said that “at this time, it’s a private family matter”.
Last year, the Smithsonian launched a Kickstarter campaign to preserve the famous ruby slippers Judy wore in the Wizard of Oz.
