Councillors from Sinn Fein and Alliance have proposed the commission of the stained glass window to celebrate the LGBT community.

Sinn Fein councillor Mary Ellen Campbell, the first openly gay Deputy Mayor of Belfast, raised the motion at the monthly Council meeting on Monday.

She said, “The City Hall represents all citizens and the installation of a stained glass window will be a positive step towards creating a more welcoming and vibrant city.”

Alliance Councillor and soon-to-be Lord Mayor Nuala McAllister seconded the motion.

She added, “I’m delighted to back a motion aimed at showcasing the positive role the LGBT community has played and continues to play across Belfast.

“Belfast is a growing city both in size and diversity and support for this project from those elected within City Hall highlights the growing thirst for a vibrant, diverse and open society, from outside.”

The City Hall already houses windows commemorating members of the Ulster Defence Regiment and Belfast mill workers.

The proposal has been referred to the Strategic Policy and Resources Committee, whose purpose is to ensure the effective use of council resources.

Last month, Sinn Fein announced that equal marriage was a ‘key issue’ in the power-sharing talks with the anti-gay marriage Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).

Members of Sinn Fein doubled down on their pledge to legislate for same-sex marriage in February.
