The leader of the Scottish Conservatives has been forced to postpone her lesbian wedding after her dog was hit by a car.

Ruth Davidson planned to marry Jen Wilson, her partner of three years, in October of this year.

She changed her plans, however, after her beloved springer spaniel Wilson was knocked over as he ran into the road chasing a flock of birds.

Davidson, currently a Member of the Scottish Parliament for Edinburgh, was forced to spend more than £10,000 on veterinary bills for Wilson, who needed metal pins and a skin graft.

The couple were forced to put their wedding plans on hold, she told The Daily Mail.

Wilson is now able to walk again, albeit with a limp.

Davidson, who is campaigning for the Conservatives to be Scotland’s second most popular party at the approaching General Election, is one of Britain’s most prominent lesbians.

She announced her engagement to Jen Wilson on Twitter last May, having popped the question while on holiday in Paris.

She was congratulated by the then Prime Minister David Cameron, whose government introduced gay marriage legislation.

The engagement came only weeks after Davidson led her party to its most successful result ever in the 2016 elections to the Scottish Parliament.

Davidson is one of many prominent LGBT politicians in Scotland – her opponent Kezia Dugdale, leader of Scottish Labour, revealed last year that she is engaged to her partner, Louise Riddell.

Davidson attracted headlines during last year’s Conservative leadership contest when she refused to criticise Andrea Leadsom – Theresa May’s main opponent – who had called gay marriage “harmful”.

She even invited Leadsom, who went on to lose to Theresa May, to her wedding.

Davidson also revealed last year that she dreams of following in the steps of former Labour MP Ed Balls – and compete on the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing.

“I want a bit of that action,” she said of Ed Balls’ appearance on the show.
