Andrew Garfield won’t rule out same-sex relationship
The Amazing Spiderman star Andrew Garfield has said he won’t rule out having a relationship with a man in the future.
The actor, who is currently starring in Angels in America at the British National Theatre made the revelation in a platform performance at the theatre, reports Gay Times.
The 33-year-old plays a character battling AIDS at the height of the AIDS epidemic.
Asked by an audience member about what techniques he used to get into character, he answered to say that he doesn’t identify as gay but that he wouldn’t rule out a relationship with a man in future.
He said: “As far as I know, I am not a gay man.
“Maybe I’ll have an awakening later in my life, which I’m sure will be wonderful and I’ll get to explore that part of the garden, but right now I’m secluded to my area, which is wonderful as well.
“I adore it, but a big concern was what right do I have to play this wonderful gay role?”
Going on, Garfield, who has dated co-star Emma Stone on and off said he is “devoted” to his friends in the LGBT community.
“I had to trust that it was the right thing and Tony [Kushner] had asked me and maybe if he’d asked me, it was the right thing. It was as about doing honour, doing justice and knowing my story,” he continued.
He added that he drew inspiration from legendary drag artist RuPaul.
“My only time off during rehearsals – every Sunday I would have eight friends over and we would just watch Ru. This is my life outside of this play. I am a gay man right now just without the physical act – that’s all,” he said.
Garfield went on to say that the role in Angels in America is the most “fulfilling” he has ever had.
“I don’t think it can get better than this in terms of everything.
“Communion with the audience – us all going through the same things together and how prevalent and how necessary it is to tell this story right now.”
The actor upstaged the Golden Globes earlier this year when he was caught on camera ‘consoling’ Ryan Reynolds – who lost out on a gong for his role as Deadpool – with a passionate kiss.
He was later asked about the kiss while appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and ended up kissing him too.
Garfield joked: “I just wanted Ryan to know that I loved him no matter if he won or lost.
“I wanted him to know it’s how you play the game, it doesn’t matter, he showed up and gave it all and it doesn’t change anything in my heart. I just wanted him to know I love him very much.”
Garfield previously spoke out after hacked emails from the Sony film studio revealed that all variants of Spider-Man are contractually banned from having same-sex romances under strict Marvel Comics licensing rules.
