Saudi Arabia’s interior ministry has ruled on a 14-year-old boy arrested for dancing in the street.

The teenager was filmed dancing to what appears to be the Macarena in a street on Tahlia Street, Jeddah.

The hilarious video has been viewed millions of times across the world in recent weeks.

Despite the clip originally being published in 2016, the recent attention caused police to investigate the dancing teen.

A tweet containing the video went viral with the title “Jeddah boy dancing in the middle of Tahlia Street is the hero we need”.

According to Saudi police spokesperson Colonel Ati bin Atiya al-Qarshi, the “accused” was arrested after “confidential investigations” took place.

It was shared by many including one person who wrote: “Dance like the religious morality police aren’t watching.”

Another wrote: “Saudi police arrests 14-year-old boy who’s video went viral. Apparently, being happy is considered a crime nowadays.”

The interior ministry has now issued a statement saying the boy has been released without charge.

He and his legal guardian were previously summoned for questioning.

“They signed a written pledge that the teen will not engage in behavior that could endanger his life and the life of others again,” the statement said.

“The notification was solely intended to warn the boy about potential consequences for his own safety, as well as to safeguard the overall safety of motorists and pedestrians.”
