Hillary Clinton revealed in her memoir What Happened that she “fought back tears” watching Kate McKinnon on Saturday Night Live after her election loss.

Recounting the landmark cold open following the election of Trump, Clinton wrote: “She sat at a grand piano and played ‘Hallelujah,’ the hauntingly beautiful song by Leonard Cohen, who had died a few days before.

“As she sang, it seemed like she was fighting back tears,” Clinton added. “Listening, so was I.”

The extract is being shared on Twitter as McKinnon won yet another Emmy at the awards ceremony on the weekend.

She was awarded Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

McKinnon thanked Clinton in her acceptance speech and gave a nod to the chapter, Grit and Gratitude, in which Clinton talks about McKinnon.

“On a very personal note, I want to say thank you to Hillary Clinton for your grace and grit,” she said.

Throughout the award winning season, McKinnon took on the character of Clinton as well as other political figures such as Jeff Sessions and Kelly-Anne Conway.

McKinnon wasn’t the only queer woman to pick up an Emmy as Lena Waithe became the first black woman to win the award for comedy writing.

Waithe picked up the Emmy for co-writing the Master of None episode, Thanksgiving.

The episode shows Waithe’s character, Denise, coming out to her family over 30 years worth of Thanksgiving celebrations.

Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer made an appearance at the Emmy awards to mock the Trump administration.

The Late Late Show host James Corden was snapped planting a kiss on Spicer’s cheek and the photo was met with criticism.

Corden has since apologised for his actions and insisted that he was “disappointed” in himself and blamed the kiss on too much alcohol and compared it to waking up the morning after a night out and regretting kissing someone.
