Jim Parsons opens up about his ‘divine’ marriage

Jim Parsons has opened up about his marriage, and how it’s lifted him spiritually.
The Big Bang Theory star, who married his long-term partner Todd Spiewak in May, said that the pair’s commitment had changed their relationship in unexpected ways.
Parsons, the highest-paid gay actor in the world at an estimated $1 million per episode, organised for the ceremony to be held in the Rainbow Room, a glamorous New York landmark in the Rockefeller Plaza.

While Parsons has been together with Spiewak for nearly a decade and a half, the actor only came out in 2012, when a New York Times writer outed him.
And during a guest appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Parsons explained how much his marriage had helped him.
The star, who will reprise his role as Sheldon Cooper in tonight’s season 11 premiere as well as providing a voiceover for new show Young Sheldon, said he thought nothing of the wedding at first.

“I didn’t really think we cared about the act of it that much, to be honest with you,” he admitted.
“And that sounds cold in a way, but I finally thought: ‘Well, let’s have a party then for the celebration … and we’ll go ahead and legalise this thing.”
But Parsons, who will celebrate 15 years with Spiewak this November, said the result of that celebration had surprised him.

“I really thought it would end at that – a party feel – but it was so much more meaningful in the moment to me than I predicted.
“And it’s been resonantly more meaningful to me afterward than I ever saw coming.”
He continued: “I’d been an adult gay person for so long at a time when that wasn’t possible that life was ‘fine.’ You know what I mean?
“I don’t know on a specific day-to-day sense what it is. But there is an underlying thing, a little buzz of something. And I keep reminding myself of it.”

To deserved cheers from the audience, he added: “I kind of forget, and then I’m like: ‘We’re a legal thing, just like mum and dad were.'”
Parsons then truly bared his soul about the relationship.
“There is this sense of divinity,” he said.
“To be in love, to find love in that way, is as close as anything else I’ve found in life that gives me the feeling of being close to God.”
He continued: “I remember when we first got together – I can’t believe i’m going to go into this – when we first got together I can remember lying in bed, closing my eyes but not being asleep and that sensation of light! Light! Light!
“And I was like, ‘Oh, I don’t know what’s going on exactly, but it feels close to something important, eternal.'”

He added that the experience connected him spiritually with his late father.
“My dad had passed a couple of years before I met Todd, and I remember very early on that sensation I would have when I closed my eyes and I felt that light.
“I thought: ‘That’s him!’
“He’s going: ‘I see you! All good! This is a great thing!'”
Parsons added: “I still feel that now, maybe not as often because life gets in the way, but sometimes that sensation of closing the eyes and going: ‘This is so close to God.'”
