Supergirl’s Maggie Sawyer just savaged her homophobic dad, and fans are overjoyed
Supergirl’s Alex Danvers and Maggie Sawyer have been one of the best same-sex couples on TV for a while now.
Last year, Alex – played by Chyler Leigh – came out as a lesbian, with fans praising it as one of the best coming out stories in years.
Leigh delighted followers by saying that “for us to be able to take that on in that environment, and like kick people’s asses, and give a peck on the cheek and just say: ‘Hey, I’m finding out more about me because of you’ – it’s a love story, and it’s beautiful.”
And at the end of the last season, after Alex was kidnapped and nearly died, we were treated to a wonderful moment of romance.
“Those firsts that you talked about?” she asked Maggie, who is played by Floriana Lima.
“I want to have them all with you. I never wanna stop having firsts with you.
“I love you, Maggie Sawyer.”
“I love you, Alex Danvers,” came the reply.
The couple then proceeded to get engaged in the season finale.
And it appears that her relationship with Alex has given Maggie the inner strength to push for a healthier, happier life for herself.
In the latest episode, the police officer meets her father for the first time since childhood.
The audience finds out in a tear-jerking scene that he left her stranded by the side of the road – simply because she was attracted to girls.
After encouragement from Alex, she rings her dad and invites him to their wedding shower – but he leaves after seeing the engaged couple kiss.
She chases him down, returns a picture of her which he kept in his wallet, and lets loose with a self-affirming, cathartic tirade.
“You gave me an amazing gift,” she tells him.
“You showed me that I’m not that scared little girl in that picture anymore.
“I am an adult woman and I’m happy in my own skin, and I’m so fortunate to be surrounded by people who value and cherish me.
“I finally understand: I don’t need you to see me or to get me, or to even like me,” she adds.
“I don’t need anything from you. I’m already good.”
And handing back the photo, she leaves, before telling Alex in the very next scene: “You’re all the family I need.”
And fans loved Maggie putting her dad in his place.

However, this barnstorming monologue will not soften the blow for Supergirl fans rendered understandably inconsolable by the news that Maggie will leave the show this season.
Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg calmed the worst fears of fans in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, but confirmed that Lima is leaving.
“Maggie does not die. I’m sure a lot of people are afraid of that.
“Maggie will continue to exist in the world and if the opportunity presents itself for her, she’ll come back,” he said.
