Sir Elton John’s sons made their dad the sweetest 71st birthday cards
Sir Elton John has shared snaps of birthday cards from his sons for his 71st birthday.
He posted a picture on Instagram of two handmade cards from sons Elijah, five, and Zachary, seven.
“Woke up to these beautiful birthday cards from my beautiful sons,” said the star, adding the hashtag “#blessed”.
The posts come after Sir Elton announced his retirement from performing to spend more time with his family.
One of the cards refers to the singer’s Million Dollar Piano concert residency, while the other says: “Love you daddy.”
Sir Elton also shared a picture of a stunning bouquet of roses from his children and husband David Furnish.
“I like flowers… Thank-you David, Zachary and Elijah!!” he wrote.
His husband, Canadian David Furnish, also posted a photo of the singer as he paid tribute on his special day.
“Happy Birthday to my amazing husband,” he said. “Nobody works harder or gives back more than you do.
“You’re a fantastic father too! The boys and I love you with all our hearts, and wish you nothing but the best for the coming year!!”
Sir Elton announced his farewell tour earlier this year, which will be spread over three years and in 300 performances around the world.
Speaking at a press conference in New York he said: “I always thought I was going to be like Ray Charles, BB King – on the road forever.
“My priorities have changed. We had children and I changed our lives. That doesn’t mean to say I’m not going to be creative, but I’m not going to travel.”
The star denied reports that he was retiring due to ill health.
“Last year I picked up an infection and I was very ill and it knocked me sideways,” he said.
“But I still did 96 shows. Believe me – if you ever do 300 shows, you’re not in ill health.”
The five-time Grammy winner has sold more than 300 million records during his career and is one of the most in-demand live performers on the planet.
The announcement came shortly after his beloved mother passed away following a short illness.
